Rare Jimmy Carter ALS as President

1p ALS inscribed overall and signed by sitting 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter (born 1924) as "Jimmy Carter" in black felt tip pen. The letter is on watermarked "The White House, Washington" letterhead with an embossed presidential seal at top. The 6.75" x 8.75." letter has been encapsulated for its protection. A small surface abrasion affecting "Joe," else in near fine condition.

On April 22, 1977 from the White House, President Jimmy Carter penned this thank you note to Joe Hall. In part, President Carter wrote: "Thanks for your good advice on the space and energy programs - ."

President Carter identified energy as the single most significant concern of his administration. He formed the Department of Energy in 1977 to monitor global energy supplies, implement nuclear energy standards, and conduct research into energy alternatives. Turbulence in the Middle East resulted in the 1979 Energy Crisis and widespread fuel shortages in the United States, after which Carter encouraged Americans to practice conservation and seek sustainable energy alternatives.

Carter appreciated the Space Program for its potential, but also seriously considered discontinuing it. Ultimately, Carter supported satellite research and programs as part of his Cold War national security policy.
