New York Early - An early military appointment in the the NY colonial government, 1733.

RARE single page, partially printed document signed, for a military appointment in the "County of Albany", dated 'November ... 1733", and signed by William Cosby as "W Cosby". 12.75" x 8".

Embossed British Royal seal to upper left. Overall toning, scattered handling smudges mostly to the right border, otherwise near fine.

Brigadier-General William Cosby (1690-1736) was an Irish soldier who served as the British royal governor of New York from 1732 to 1736. During his short term as governor, Cosby was portrayed as one of the most oppressive royal placeholders in British Colonial American. Cosby arrived in New York City on 24 April 1732, bringing his wife, two of his daughters, and one of his sons. He assumed office on 7 August. At the time, New York had 50,000 inhabitants, but its port activity was booming with docks and shipyards. King George II gave Cosby a land grant on 2 January 1734, of 22,000 acres on the Mohawk River, in what became Herkimer County, New York, and named Cosby's Manor later (19 February 1736). The grant, sold in 1772 which ultimately included the later sites of Utica, Schuyler, New York.

A fantastic, rare example of an early military appointment offering " Gonardus Bankor to be socond[sic] Lieutenant of the first company of Militia foot for the manner of the ... County of Albany" .... 'as socond[sic] lieutenant thereof, and duly to exercise both the officers and soldiers of that Company in Arms AND as they are hereby Commanded to Obey You as their Second Lieutenant ..."

Early Colonial examples of military appointments in this condition are quite scarce.
