Description:

Rare ALS, Alger Hiss sends 90th birthday wishes Dr. James T. Shotwell, with whom he had served in the State Department, "an occasion of such moment as to obviate scruples over niceties of restraint..."

ALGER HISS (1904-1996) Rare Autograph Letter Signed, "Alger Hiss," 1.5p, 6.75" x 9.75", front & verso. New York, August 10, 1964. To historian Dr. [James T.] Shotwell (1874-1965). Fine condition.

Dr. Shotwell served as a private consultant to the U.S. State Department in 1945. When Alger Hiss was granted a leave of absence as President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace to fight his court battle against Whittaker Chambers in 1948, Shotwell was elected President. In part, "In recent years I have refrained from writing to you – in the absence of any indication as to whether such an initiative might be welcome. But your recent 90th birthday seems to present the occasion for a restatement of my affection and admiration, an occasion of such moment as to obviate scruples over niceties of restraint...I recall, often, the period of our close association with pleasure, pride and a lively realization of the inspiration and insights I gained from our collaboration...."
