Burr Aaron 1756 - 1836 Rare Aaron Burr ALS with full signature while New York state assemblyman, along with Supreme Court Justice Henry Brockholst Livingston ANS.

Archive comprised of two notes from 1785 New York, one signed by Aaron Burr and one by Henry Brockholst Livingston.

The 1pp ALS is signed "Yr Humbly Aaron Burr" at center, dated October 15, 1785, and addressed to Ezekiel Howell, Esq., Sheriff of Orange County, New York. Aaron Burr gives directions regarding the payment of a debt: "Sir, Please to deliver to the Bearer ... with the Bail Bonds - - and pay him what money may be levied on the Execution afd. Babcock - - ". In near fine condition, with expected paper folds and water stains along vertical central crease and left edge. Docket description verso. Page measuring 7.25" x 9.25".

Aaron Burr (1756-1836) served as 3 rd U.S. Vice President, although today he is most associated with killing Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804) in a duel. Burr was a Revolutionary War veteran, a trained lawyer, and a politician who served as an assemblyman, senator, and attorney general in New York. In 1785, when he signed this letter, he was serving one of two non-consecutive one-year terms with the New York State Assembly. The historical records do not offer any additional information about Ezekiel Howell, but Orange County is located about sixty-four miles to the northwest of New York City. Almost twenty years after signing this document, Burr fatally shot Alexander Hamilton outside of Weehawken, NJ.

The second 1pp note is signed "B. Livingston" at top. Signature is decisive and original, with a carefree loop extending backwards from the "n" encircling the last part of his name. In near fine condition, with expected paper folds, some well-worn. Slight tear separating first initial from last name. Minor stains to the last name, and impression from the seal above. Integral address leaf docketed and with weathering including torn area corresponding to seal. Page measures 6.5" x 8.5".

In New York on September 10, 1785, Livingston requested that "Ezekiel Howall, Esqr., Sheriff of Orange County" send him information if a defendant is arrested. "Sir, The defendant Thomas Sayre lives at Goshen. Please to send me the bail bond with the writ in case you arrest him". This signed note dates from the period in which Livingston served as a lawyer in New York City. It is unknown why Thomas Sayre lived under the imminent threat of imprisonment, yet we might assume that it pertained to charges of long-standing, such as debt. Livingston showcases his professionalism and diligence here in requesting legal documents as soon as they became available. The historical records do not offer any additional information about Ezekiel Howell, but Orange County is located about sixty-four miles to the northwest of New York City.

Henry Brockholst Livingston (1757-1823) served as a staff officer in the beginning of the Revolutionary War. He served as secretary to his brother-in-law John Jay, and then in a diplomatic capacity in Spain. For about twenty years, Livingston served in private practice. From 1802, he served on the New York Supreme Court, and between 1807 and his death, he served as Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court alongside Chief Justice John Marshall (1755-1835).
