Books

The Republican Party by E.V. Smalley. New York: American Book Exchange, 1880. First Edition. 341pp, 4.75" x 6.5". Two plates with tissue guards present: James A. Garfield (frontispiece) and Chester A. Arthur. Green cloth boards stamped in black and blind, with stars in gilt at front cover. Gilt titling at spine. Boards show edge and corner wear, with light soiling and scuffing. Age toning and minor discoloration to the interior and text block. Title page is slightly loosened from binding. Overall, in very good plus condition and rare.

Smalley's manual offers readers a nineteenth century look into the origin, rise, and growth of the Republican party. It also includes notes on early Republican leaders and Republican victories. And while this book, on its surface, seems to be a historical account of American government, it was actually written as a campaign boost for the Garfield-Arthur presidential ticket.

Eugene Virgil Smalley (1841-1899) was a journalist and the editor of Northwest Magazine. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Seventh Ohio infantry. Smalley was discharged in 1863 for wounds received in the battle of Port Republic. During the years following the war, Smalley had a career as a prominent Republican journalist in Washington, D.C. and New York. As a political correspondent, Smalley enjoyed the acquaintance of several presidents of the United States, and he was the trusted friend of both Rutherford Hayes and James Garfield. He is known as one of the most influential railroad publicists of the late nineteenth century.
