Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was an American abolitionist, lecturer, and philosopher who led the transcendentalist movement in the mid-19th century. It appears that these notes were later used in one of Emerson's lectures, entitled "France, or Urbanity", which he delivered on January 17, 1854. The lecture was the fifth in a series of six private lectures held in Philadelphia, for which he received $1,166.34 in total.
