R.E. Lee Protective of Women Just After Appomattox "I fear these Louisianians think our Virginia girls belong to them."
ALS

Autograph Letter Signed, dated July 29, 1865, sent from Cartersville, Virginia, written by General Robert E. Lee shortly after his surrender and the end of the Civil War. Written to James Kerr Caskie, Lee's trusted associate and frequent intermediary in financial and legal matters. Lee reflects on his return to civilian life stating that he "met a Capt Bridges at Belmead the other day, where he has been refreshing himself since the war" all while honoring his late sister's wishes, ensuring the proper transfer of her estate after she died intestate. Interestingly, Lee also writes with gentle humor about a visit from Miss Anna Logan to Capt. Owens of Louisiana, adding a wry remark about Southern courtship stating "I fear these Louisianians think our Virginia girls belong to them." The letter sports expected folds, but shows little to no signs of aging with some frayed paper marks on edges. Boldly signed. Measures 7.75" x 9.75."

In full:

"My dear Mr. Caskie,

I enclose powers of attorney authorizing you to transfer some stock in the Bank of Virginia & Farmers Bk, standing in my name as trustee for my sister, to her only child, Louis H. Marshall. My sister has died without a will, but she always told me that she desired at her death that this stock should go to her son. I have recently rec'd a letter from her husband, Judge Wm L. Marshall, requesting that I would transfer said stock to his son Louis.

Should there be no difficulty in the transfer of the stock, will you be so kind in obtaining the new certificates to enclose them for me to Judge Wm L. Marshall, Baltimore Md. —apprise me of the fact that I may write to his son accordingly.

Mrs. Lee, has no doubt in her letters informed you of all family affairs. I wrote to you some days since, thanking you for your letter to me, requesting you to present my kindest regards to Mrs. Caskie & Miss Knoell. Tell the latter that Miss Anna Logan was driven over yesterday in a buggy by Capt Owens of Louisiana. I fear these Louisianians think our Virginia girls belong to them. I met a Capt Bridges at Belmead the other day, where he has been refreshing himself since the war. None of them shall bear her off, I assure her. I think Agnes is slightly better, but the disease is not yet conquered.

Very truly yours,

R E Lee"
