R.B. Hayes Exhibitable 1p ALS Re: Attending Kansas Festival

1p autograph letter inscribed overall by former 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893), and signed by him as "Rutherford B. Hayes" at lower right. Written at Spiegel Grove, Hayes's estate in Freemont, Ohio, on March 19, 1890. On laid watermarked cream bifold paper. The remaining pages are blank. With expected overall toning. Expected light paper folds, else near fine. 5.375" x 8.5".

Former President Hayes wrote this note to John James Ingalls (1833-1900), a U.S. Senator from Kansas, regarding the likelihood of his attending the annual Ottawa Chautauqua Assembly held at Forest Park in Ottawa, Kansas.

In part, with untouched spelling and punctuation:

"I have your kind note of the 14th with the accompanying letter as to meeting the Union Secretary of Kansas at the Ottawa Chautauqua Assembly June 24. It would give me great gratification to attend, but circumstances, which I cannot know definitely about, until the middle of May, will perhaps prevent…"

The Ottawa Chautauqua Assembly in Kansas was at once a symposium and a festival, modeled after the original camp style meeting first held in Chautauqua, New York in 1874. The Assembly functioned as a sort of outdoor classroom, where adults continued their education in a serene outdoor setting. Participants attended lectures, enrolled in courses, and listened to a battery of impressive speakers, some of them among the leading politicians, writers, and personalities of the day.

Rutherford B. Hayes was in fact able to attend the Ottawa Chautauqua Assembly that year. He delivered a speech at Forest Park on Grand Army of the Republic Day, on June 27, 1890.

Hayes was one of a succession of late-nineteenth-century Republican presidents who consolidated Reconstruction policies after the Civil War. Hayes abandoned his Cincinnati law practice to enlist during the Civil War, where he was later promoted to the rank Brevet Major General in the Union Army. He became involved in politics after the war, serving in the 39th U.S. Congress and later as Governor of Ohio. After a closely contested presidential race against Democratic candidate Samuel J. Tilden, Hayes was declared president. Although many contemporaries view Hayes's single term as one of the best of the worst, historians concede that he also achieved a lot. Hayes is credited with further reconciling the North and South, instituting civil service reforms, advocating for hard currency, and even restoring popular faith in the presidency.
