Autograph Letter Signed "Ch: A. Murray / Marechal de la Maison" (Master of the Household), 1 page, 7.75" x 9", 0.25" wide gilt border affixed. Buckingham Palace, August 26, 1839. Red wax seal affixed to lower right. In French, translated. Rippled when affixed to a card of the same size. On verso is an ornate title page "Cour / de / S.M. La Reine / D'Angleterre" ("Court / of / Her Majesty The Queen / of England"). Good condition.

In full, "I have the honor to tell you that I have presented to the Queen the expressions of loyalty and all wishes of the Chanteurs Montegnards to Her Majesty, which H.M. has the goodness to accept gracefully - Her Majesty also gave me the responsibility to assure you of the pleasure with which she heard the songs of Montagnards on the birthday of H.R.H. The Duchess of Kent."


The Duchess of Kent (1786-1861), Queen Victoria's mother, had celebrated her 53rd birthday on August 17, 1839. French composer Alfred Roland organized the Chanteurs Montegnards (Mountain Singer)in 1838. In 1839, the singers held concerts throughout Europe including performances for Queen Victoria in London, King Louis Philippe in Paris, Czar Nicholas I in Moscow, and Pope Gregory XVI in Rome.
