Queen Victoria Signed Australian Commission for Consul at Adelaide
DS
A signed commission by Queen Victoria and countersigned by Lord Leveson. 1p, measuring 15.75" x 11.5", St. James, London, dated December 22, 1884. Signed by Queen Victoria as "Victoria R" and countersigned by Lord Leveson, Granville George Leveson-Gower, as "Granville." The document acknowledges that "The Emperor of Austria has by a Commission…constituted Mr. Adolph von Treuer to be His Consul at Adelaide…" With a blind embossed paper seal at the upper left corner of the document. With flattened folds. Some chipping and small tears at the upper and lower edges. Light toning along the edges. With large, bold signatures. Very good overall.

Adolph von Treuer (1822-1894) was born in Bavaria but came to Australia in 1855. Von Treuer was later made consul in Adelaide for Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and he served on the German Council from 1866-1883. He was one of the original members of the South Australian Council of Education and a founding member of the University of Adelaide Council. Von Treuer also served as the confidential secretary for Sir Thomas Elder from 1864 until his death 30 years later. Granville George Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville (1815-1891), styled Lord Leveson, was a British Liberal statesman and diplomat. He is best remembered for his service as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, and his keen foreign policy kept Britain free from European wars and improved relations with the United States after many tense years during the American Civil War.
