Queen Victoria was the longest-serving British monarch up until 2015, when her record was surpassed by great-great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II. During Victoria's 64-year-long reign, she took an active role in managing her nation's domestic and foreign affairs. Legislating, advising, and staying informed required a daily royal work regimen. According to the November 14, 1850 issue of the Cambridge Chronical, Queen Victoria usually tackled business after breakfast, where "a couple of hours are devoted to the perusal of letters and the 'despatch of business,' which consists of reading abstracts of public documents which she has to sign…"

Prince Consort Albert had exerted a positive influence on the young queen's personal work habits. He taught her how to stay organized and work efficiently, and even revived the practice of using locked despatch boxes to contain important government documents. The two worked side by side at matching desks at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight.

Victoria oversaw an industrializing England and an expanding overseas empire including India after 1876. She, along with her nine children, would dominate European politics (and royal households) throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
