Elizabeth II (b.1926) has since 1952 served as the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom, and numerous other realms and territories, as well as head of the Commonwealth. Extremely popular, the queen is known for taking a serious interest in government and political affairs, apart from her ceremonial duties, and is credited with modernizing many aspects of the monarchy. In 2015, Elizabeth surpassed Queen Victoria to become the longest-reigning British monarch in history. In February 2022, Elizabeth celebrated her Platinum Jubilee, marking seven decades of her service to the Commonwealth.

The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George is a British order of chivalry founded in 1818 by King George IV, while he was acting as regent for his father, King George III. It is named in honor of two military saints, Saint Michael and Saint George. Originally bestowed solely upon those in high positions in the Mediterranean, the Order now recognizes any citizen of the United Kingdom; however, the honor is conferred mostly on officials in colonial affairs, foreign-service officers and diplomats, and others who have performed important duties in Commonwealth countries. Foreigners may be admitted as honorary members. Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis (1891-1969) was Grand Master of the Order between 1959 and 1967.
