Lt. Col. Valentine Jones (c. 1723-1779) was the officer in charge of the 52nd Regiment of Foot and the highest-ranking British army officer in Quebec City. Jones's career as an officer in the British army began in 1744, when he was commissioned as ensign in the 33rd Regiment of Foot. As such, he fought in the famed Battles of Dettingen (1743) and Fontenoy (1745). He was promoted to lieutenant in the 33rd in 1745, captain-lieutenant in 1754, and captain of a company in 1755; it was with that rank that he transferred to the newly-raised 54th. In 1758, his 54th Regiment was re-numbered as the 52nd, in which he was made major, and soon after that, lieutenant-colonel. Jones was able to achieve a brevet promotion to the rank of colonel in the army in 1772. Jones returned to Britain in late 1778, receiving the rank of lieutenant general and the honor of an audience with King George III. But his health was failing. He was granted leave from the army and returned to Wales, where he died after a long and revered career of army service for 38 years.
