Description:

Psychic Researcher F.W.H. Myers Writes That His Wife "has caught diphtheria visiting some wretched homes"

Autograph Letter Signed as “F W H Myers,” 3.5pp, 4.5” x 5”, front & verso on two conjoined sheets. “Leckhampton House,” Cambridge stationery, January 6, 1898. To Sally. Fine condition.

In part, “Your welcome words & your beautiful bird-pictures came like a glimpse of sunlight with what has been of late a very sad house. My Wife has caught diphtheria, as we believe, in visiting some wretched homes in her work for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, - & has had a very close struggle for life. Antitoxin has, we now trust, saved her; but her exhaustion is still extreme; - She could not read your letter or look at your birds herself – But she has been most patient at home, & is as full of love as ever … All is done that can be done; - by Doctors, & Nurses … Often I also think of you:- & wonder as to your inward fates, & what may befall that womanly & buoyant heart Your affectionate friend F.W.H. Myers"

Frederick W. H. Myers' wife, photographer Eveleen Tennant Myers (1856-1937), survived her illness and lived another 39 years. Myers died on January 17, 1901, in Rome. After his death, many claimed communications from his spirit came from mediums around the world. Irish spiritualist medium, author, and suffragette Geraldine Cummins (1890-1969) claimed that she channeled two books in which Myers describes the afterworld as a resident. The first was published as “The Road to Immortality” (1933), the second as “Beyond Human Personality” (1935).
