Description:

Charles II of England King

Proclamation on the Popish Plot, Assassination of Charles II, More Than 20 Were Executed

By the King. A Proclamation for Incouragement of the Further Discover of the Popish Plot [caption title]. London: Printed by John Bill, Thomas Newcomb, and Henry Hills, 1680. Broadside, 10 ¾” x 14”. Laid down on a slightly larger sheet of stiff paper, lightly foxed, ink stamp in upper right quadrant. Very good.

A large and handsome proclamation broadside seeking information on the Popish Plot, a fabricated assassination plot on the life of King Charles II.  The broadside has a large woodcut initial, and a large relief cut of the royal seal at the top of the page.  Beginning in 1678, Titus Oates and Israel Tonge concocted an anti-Catholic conspiracy in which they claimed that the Catholic Church intended to assassinate the English monarch.  The plot initially implicated the Jesuits, increasing in scope and audacity as time passed.  Though the King was skeptical, more than twenty innocent men were executed over the course of the three years of hysteria that resulted from the plot.  A scarce and interesting item.
