Printed Act of Congress Signed in "Type" by George Washington & John Adams Permitting the Collection of Taxes for Vessels Entering Baltimore Harbor


Attractive, Printed Act of Congress, Signed in type by George Washington as President and John Adams as Vice President, one page, 7½" x 11", February 9, 1791, Philadelphia, PA, titled "An Act declaring the Consent of Congress to a certain Act of the State of Maryland." In part: "Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the consent of Congress be and is hereby granted and declared to the operation of an Act of the General Assembly of Maryland…entitled 'An act to empower the wardens of the ports of Baltimore to levy and collect the duty therein mentioned"…". According to state archives, the General Assembly of Maryland sought to collect a duty of up to two cents per ton for each vessel that entered the harbor at Baltimore. Trivial damp stains at the blank lower margin, otherwise fine. Ideal for presentation or display.
