On September 7, 1992, Princess Diana (1961-1997) wrote: "Dear Roger, I was so touched to get your letter + the contents brought great comfort at a difficult time - You are kind to think of me + I did want you to know how deeply I appreciated your concern. With my best wishes, Yours sincerely, Diana".

In this thank you note to Roger Chubb (born 1943), then a director of several UK dance companies including the English National Ballet School, Ltd., Princess Diana refers to her recent "difficult time". In May 1992, British tabloid journalist Andrew David Morton (born 1953) released a biography entitled Diana: Her True Story. While the extent to which Princess Diana cooperated with Morton is still unclear, the publication of the book began what the press dubbed the "War of the Waleses". The deterioration of the royal marriage accelerated when transcripts and taped phone conversations between Princess Diana and her friend James Gilbey were released to the press in August 1992. "Camillagate", the scandal caused by the release of taped conversations between Prince Charles (born 1948) and his mistress Camilla Parker Bowles (born 1947), erupted in November 1992. The resultant sensational media coverage revealed the infidelity of both spouses and Princess Diana's struggle with depression.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced their "amicable separation" just two months after Diana wrote this letter to Roger Chubb. Insiders cite age and personality differences as causes of the marriage's collapse, but the extramarital affairs of each also contributed to it. The pair officially divorced roughly one year before Diana's death.

A sincere and gracious note from Princess Diana during a period of tabloid media frenzy.
