Presidents Lincoln and Jackson Death and Funeral Announcements

A pair of printed pamphlets regarding the funerals of Presidents Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln.

1. A printing of General Orders, announcing the death of Jackson. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 8" x 10", Washington, D.C., dated June 16, 1845. Signed in type by George Bancroft, the acting Secretary of War and Secretary of the Navy. Printed eight days after Jackson's death. Reading in part: "The President of the United States, with heartfelt sorrow, announces to the Army, the Navy, and the Marine Corps, the death of Andrew Jackson. On the evening of Sunday, the eighth day of June, about six o'clock, he resigned his spirit to his Heavenly Father…The power of his mind impressed itself on the policy of his country, and still lives, and will live forever, in the memory of its people…" With light edge toning and minor wear to the edges and corners. Very fine overall.

2. Lincoln's Funeral Order of Procession. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 5.75" x 9.25", [Washington, D.C.], ca. April 19, 1865. It lists the details of the funeral held on April 19, 1865, during which Lincoln's body was transported from the White House to the Capitol. The escort included several regiments and battalions, as well as Ulysses S. Grant, Vice Admiral Farragut, President Johnson, Lincoln's family, and a delegation of Illinois state members as mourners. With light edge toning and minor wear to the edges and corners. Very fine overall.

Andrew Jackson passed away at the age of 78, having suffered from chronic dropsy and heart failure. On June 17, 1845, every military station in the country lowered the national flag to half-staff to honor the former president. In recognition of his death, a thirteen-gun salute was fired at daybreak, with additional half-hour guns fired during the day.

During Abraham Lincoln's funeral procession, large crowds viewed the somber march from sidewalks, windows, rooftops, etc. along the mile-and-a-half route. The procession was headed by a detachment of “colored troops” and included the newly sworn-in President Johnson, many Congressmen, Lincoln’s two surviving sons, and numerous veterans. The late president’s body was placed in the Rotunda under the Capitol dome, where he lay in state until his body was transported to its final resting place in Illinois.
