1p ALS inscribed overall and signed by presidential hopeful Jimmy Carter (born 1924) as "Jimmy" at lower right. Written on cream stationery paper with "Jimmy Carter, 1 Woodland Drive, Plains, Georgia 31780" letterhead on March 27, 1975. In near fine condition, with expected paper folds and two staple marks at upper left. Measures 5.5" x 8.5". Accompanied by a Yale University News Release, a copy of a typed letter, and an election brochure, all relating to Carter's recent visit to Yale University.

Jimmy Carter visited Yale University on March 25-27, 1975 to accept his appointment as Chubb Fellow. The fellowship recognized individuals who had demonstrated an interest in politics and public service. During his late March visit, Carter met with faculty at Timothy Dwight College, the Yale residential hall that sponsored the fellowship, and also attended an exclusive dinner at Mory's. (Established in 1849 as a restaurant catering to Yale undergraduate students, Mory's is now a private club located on New Haven's York Street.) Carter was an extremely busy man: the academic fellow was also running as a Democratic presidential candidate.

Carter had met Chester and Joan Kerr during his visit to in New Haven. He wrote:

"I enjoyed being with you + really appreciate your interest + friendship.

During the months ahead your advice + active support can be very valuable to me.

I'll do my best never to disappoint you.

Jimmy."

Also included is a copy of a 1p typed letter dated March 31, 1975 from Chester Kerr, Director of Yale University Press. In part: "Dear Governor Carter: Many thanks for your note. Joan and I enjoyed the privilege of meeting and listening to you at the Babbidge dinner at Mory's. Clearly your visit to Yale was a memorable one for all of us." Kerr enclosed a copy of the Yale University press release announcing Carter's visit to Yale campus. Accompanied by an 8pp bifold brochure entitled "For America's third century, why not our best? Elect Jimmy Carter President."

Carter's correspondent Chester Brooks Kerr (1913-1999) was a Yale University graduate who worked for Harcourt Brace, Reynal & Hitchcock, and Ticknor & Fields before joining Yale University Press in 1949; he would eventually serve as its director between 1959-1979. Kerr is celebrated for the eponymous report he wrote about the state of American university presses in 1949, and was elected into the Publishers Hall of Fame in 1986.

The "Babbidge dinner" almost certainly referred to Yale alumnus Homer D. Babbidge (1925-1984), who had served as president of the University of Connecticut through most of the 60s, and who had returned to Yale in 1972 to become master of Timothy Dwight College.
