Description:

Nixon Richard

President Nixon Thanks for “urging me not to resign the Presidency … It is my intention to remain on the job … I endeavor to fulfill my responsibilities…” Historically Important!

Typed Letter Signed “RN,” one page, 6.75” x 8.75” dated February 20, 1974. On White House stationery blind embossed with the presidential seal. To The Honorable Edwin D. Eshleman. Fine condition.

In full, “Dear Ed: The joint letter you signed recently urging me not to resign the Presidency had been received and I am grateful for this expression of sentiments by you and your colleagues in the House. It is my intention to remain on the job and perform my duties in the best fashion possible. As I endeavor to fulfill my responsibilities, it is reassuring to know that I have your support. With kindest regards. ”

On July 27, 1974, the House Judiciary Committee voted 27-11 to recommend to the full House Article I of the proposed articles of impeachment charging Pres. Nixon with obstruction of justice in nine areas of alleged offenses in furtherance of the Watergate cover-up; with 11 Republicans voting “No.” On July 29th, Article II, accusing Pres. Nixon of repeatedly misusing his powers to violate constitutional rights of U.S. citizens, was approved 28-10. On August 6, 1974, the “Los Angeles Times” reported that on that day Republican Congressman John B. Anderson of Illinois said that the Republican leaders of the House have reached an agreement that President Nixon should resign. On August 8, 1974, President Nixon announced he would “resign the Presidency effective at noon tomorrow…”

This is a rare Nixon letter directly referring to his possible resignation, here being publicly offered for sale. In 1995, a draft of his resignation letter signed in a similar abbreviated way, sold for $82,500 at auction. Autograph pioneer Charles Hamilton, in his “American Autographs,” points out that “most of the letters that Nixon personally signed as president were signed with initials.”

Of the possibly hundreds of signed souvenir typescripts of Nixon’s letter of resignation that have hit the market in the last 40 years, note that they are signed well after the event and are merely “mock ups” . This item is the “real deal”.
