Description:

JFK inscribes a White House vignette to Jacqueline Kennedy's Personal Secretary

White House Vignette Signed "To Mary B. Gallager - / Best wishes - / John Kennedy" as President on the matte. Image 4.25" x 2.5", 6" x 4" overall (visible), matted to 11.25" x 9.5". Northeast view of The White House, hand engraved card at the U.S. Department of the Treasury Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Most of the thin gold bordering the vignette has rubbed off. Fine condition.

Undoubtedly, President Kennedy inscribed this vignette to Mrs. Kennedy's personal secretary, Mary B. Gallagher. Having a problem spelling her name, JFK tried to correct it, then, evidently decided to simply inscribe another one. The signed vignette here offered was most probably kept by a member of the White House staff.

Mary Barelli Gallagher became one of newly elected Senator John F. Kennedy's secretaries in January 1953. After her first child was born, Mrs. Gallagher became a part-time secretary to Mrs. Kennedy's mother, Mrs. Hugh Auchincloss. From 1957-1964, she was Jacqueline Kennedy's personal secretary. One might think that JFK would know the middle initial and how to spell the last name of Mrs. Gallagher, but it is possible that he always referred to her simply as "Mary."
