n.p., ca. 1868
President James Buchanan and Harriet Lane Signed Book, "The Progress of America," Also Signed by Author!
Signed book
A signed volume of the "The Progress of America, From the Discovery by Columbus to the Year 1846," Vol I: "Historical and Statistical" by John McGregor, bearing signature of both President James Buchanan and First Lady Harriet Lane Johnston, as well as that of the author. London: Whittaker & Co., 1847. Thick 4to. (6.75" x 10"), 1520pp., hardbound in blue linen with gilt title at spine. Loosening at spine, sunning to boards, bumped corners and light overall toning, both signature pages bear scuffing, still good.

Buchanan signs on the yellow inside cover: "James Buchanan," while Johnston signs opposite his on the first free yellow endpaper, adding "Wheatland, 1868." She adds a second signature "Harriet" on the half title page, which is also signed by author John MacGregor and adding an inscription thereon.

Harriet Lane Johnston (1830-1903) was Buchanan's niece who served as her bachelor uncle's first lady (or "hostess) during his presidency. Johnston has been regarded as the first of the "modern first ladies" for her advocacy work and fashion. "Hal" was so beloved by her country that she has drawn comparisons to Jackie Kennedy for her popularity.

John MacGregor (1797-1857) was a Scottish statistician and politician. His family emigrated to Canada in 1803, sailing to Pictou, Nova Scotia. In 1806 they moved to Covehead on Prince Edward Island. As a young man MacGregor set up as a merchant in Charlottetown. In 1822 he served in the office of high sheriff; he was dismissed as a result of involvement in the dealings of Charles Douglass Smith. Put on trial at Smith's behest, he became popular and in 1824 a member of the House of Assembly. He left Canada, traveling through North America, collecting statistics (biblio.com).
