President Harry S. Truman TLS regarding Philippine War Damage Commission expiration

1p TLS on "The White House, Washington" letterhead signed by acting 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman (1884-1972) as “Harry S. Truman” in black pen at center right. The cream paper is watermarked with a presidential eagle and is in near fine condition. Expected light paper folds and a few corner wrinkles. The page measures 7.875" x 10.375".

President Harry S. Truman wrote his friend and colleague Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snyder (1895-1985) from the White House on March 29, 1951. Truman requested that the Department of the Treasury take possession of any property or records once belonging to the now defunct Philippine War Damage Commission.

President Truman wrote: "The Philippine War Damage Commission, having completed the administration of its substantive functions, will cease to exist April 1, 1951. For the purpose of accomplishing the liquidation of any outstanding affairs of the Commission, I request that the Department of the Treasury take possession, effective April 1, 1951, of any remaining records and property of the Commission".

The Philippine War Damage Commission, formed after the passage of the 1946 Philippine Rehabilitation Act, received, reviewed, and settled claims for private and public property damage sustained during World War II in the Philippines. The commission at its largest employed over 1000 American and Filipino employees. It was authorized to grant up to $400,000,000 in settlements during the course of its 5-year-term; the commission expired in 1951.

Businessman and Truman friend John W. Snyder served as the 54th Secretary of the Treasury during the Truman administration.
