President Eisenhower Writes to Leithead, Preparing to Live as a Private Citizen

Single page typed letter signed, on letterhead of DDE, The White House. Dated "January 16, 1961", and signed by President Eisenhower as "DE."  Fine condition.

A lovely letter from Eisenhower to personal friend Barry Leithead, President of Cluett, Peabody & Company. The two shared a passion for golf, and were stanch Republicans. This would be one of the last few letters written by Eisenhower as President as he prepared for private life, shown in part below:

" … I have lived in ignorance of the identity of the individuals who so thoughtfully and kindly provided the means by which was built the house at Augusta …

The house has enabled Mamie and me, when in Augusta, to entertain good friends in a family atmosphere and, when we so chose to live in complete privacy …

I shall hope, at some future time, to have an opportunity to thank you more intimately and personally. But I did not want to leave this office without making a written record of my gratitude … "

The Eisenhower Cabin, which sits prominently beside No. 10 tee at Augusta National, is immediately distinguished from the others at Augusta by the gilded eagle that adorns the pediment. A spacious porch with four rocking chairs looks out on the practice putting green. The building has three floors, with a pair of bedrooms on each of the top two floors, and a basement space that was used by the Secret Service whenever Eisenhower was in town. A regular vacation at Augusta had become part of his life, and he wished to continue this as President. (Indeed, in his eight years as President he visited the club 29 times.)

This cabin was paid for by Augusta members and designed by a local architect in association with the Secret Service. Eisenhower’s stays there followed a regular pattern of work in an office in the morning, and then in the afternoon he would hit some practice balls and then play a round, often in company with Cliff Roberts and the club pro. In the evening Ike liked to play bridge.

Eisenhower is not the only president to have stayed there. Much later, Ronald Raegan did so in 1983 with senior figures in his administration when planning the invasion of Grenada. An image of this seemingly 'simple Cabin' is shown for review.
