Eisenhower Dwight

President Eisenhower Remarkable Letter "There Are Many Men Who Know Well of my Faults and Fully Aware of the Many Errors I Have Made"

Single page typed letter signed on White House stationary, 7" x 10.5". Dated "March 8, 1958", and signed by President Dwight Eisenhower as "D.E." Bright and fine.

Perhaps one of the most resoundingly humble and warm letter we have seen from a President to a close friend, thanking and cherishing him for this important friendship and support:

" … I have felt a compulsion to write … to certain friends, outside of government, to whom I am deeply indebted for a kind of assistance and help that is all the more valuable to me because invariably it has been selflessly and spontaneously rendered.

I am speaking of men on whose friendship I count on with certainty. They are men who know well my faults and, fully aware of the many errors I have made, are still so understanding and so generous as to forgive mistakes and to support, both privately and publicly, my efforts to contribute something to our common country.

Your support has meant more to me that words can say. Your readiness to help, your understanding of my difficulties, your disinterested counsel and the complete unselfishness with which you have extended so may courtesies to me and to my family, have helped me immeasurably and times without number over some tough and discouraging spots.

Because these sentiments are so fully known to you, the writing of this letter is, in one sense, needless. But sometimes, in my pre-occupation with public affairs, I feel that I may be remiss in letting my best friend know that my obligation to them is deep and everlasting. Indeed, it is one debt I truly cherish."

During his presidency, Eisenhower managed Cold War-era tensions with the Soviet Union under the looming threat of nuclear weapons, ended the war in Korea in 1953 and authorized a number of covert anti-communist operations by the CIA around the world. On the home front, where America was enjoying a period of relative prosperity, Eisenhower strengthened Social Security, created the massive new Interstate Highway System and maneuvered behind the scenes to discredit the rabid anti-Communist Senator Joseph McCarthy. Though popular throughout his administration, he faltered in the protection of civil rights for African Americans by failing to fully enforce the Supreme Court’s mandate for the desegregation of schools in Brown v. Board of Education (1954).

A very gracious letter written by President Eisenhower to Barry Leithead, and a unique inside look at the man behind the highest position in the United States.
