Eisenhower Dwight 1890 - 1969 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed letter advocating higher education
Single page TLS on tan White House Stationary, 6.75" x 8.75", dated "October 13, 1959", and boldly signed in full signature in vibrant gold felt tip by President Eisenhower as "Dwight Eisenhower". Expected folds, fine condition
A lovely crisp, clean TLS on White House stationary. Eisenhower responds to a thoughtful letter from Don Allen about a "possible merger of Sterling College and the College of Emporia", both of which were located in Kansas at the time. Eisenhower diplomatically noted "It would not be appropriate for me to comment on your suggestion, for I do not have information essential to forming a judgement. Construction costs, local pride, living accommodations for faculty and students, and many other questions will arise as the proposal is considered. Needless to say, I am interested in all efforts to improve higher education and feel that in some cases the merging of our smaller church supported institutions could help in achieving improvements."
As it turned out the two institutions remained separate entities with ultimately The College of Emporia formally being sold to The Way International. Of interest however is, Colonel John Byers Anderson, a Civil War Colonel, had donated his personal library to The College of Emporia in 1888, and later a Carnegie grant provided the funds for the college to build the Anderson Memorial Library, in memory of John B. Anderson, whom Carnegie had known when younger. Carnegie also served on the board of trustees of the College of Emporia. Today the library was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
