President Arthur appoints the Postmaster of Idaho Springs, Colorado - countersigned by the youngest U.S. Cabinet member since Alexander Hamilton

CHESTER A. ARTHUR (1829-1886) Partly Printed Document Signed " Chester A. Arthur" as President, 1 page, 17" x 14". Washington, D.C., October 18, 1884. Countersigned " Frank Hatton" as Postmaster General. Completed in manuscript. Gilt blind embossed seal of the Post Office Department, 2.5" diameter, affixed with red ribbons at lower left. Usual folds. Fine condition.

In part, "Know ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the Intelligence, Diligence, and Discretion of Jacob J. Elliott, I do appoint him Postmaster at Idaho Springs, in the County of Clear Creek, State of Colorado, and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfill the duties of that office..."

Frank Hatton (1846-1894) served as Arthur's Postmaster General for less than four months, from October 14, 1884, to the end of his administration on March 3, 1885. Hatton was editor of The Washington Post and President of the Gridiron Club at the time of his death at age 48.
