Description:

Coolidge Calvin

1p partly printed and partly handwritten document signed by 30th U.S. President Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933) as “Calvin Coolidge” at bottom right. Bearing a cream embossed seal of the United States to the left of the signature of Acting Secretary of State Joseph C. Grew (1880-1965). In near fine condition, with a few minor corner bends at top. The document measures 19" x 14".

By signing this August 8, 1924 document at Washington, DC, President Coolidge authorized the appointment of Jerome Klahr Huddle (1891-1959) to the rank of Foreign Service Officer, Fourth Class. Huddle was a career diplomat who would eventually go on to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Burma between 1947 and 1949. Co-signee Joseph C. Grew also devoted his professional life to the diplomatic corps, serving in Egypt, Austro-Hungary, Denmark, Switzerland, Turkey, and Japan. He worked as Under Secretary of State between 1924 and 1927, during which time he supervised the establishment of the Foreign Service Office.

Coolidge had set aside his successful Northampton, Massachusetts commercial law practice to engage in politics, first as a William McKinley campaign aide and eventually as mayor of Northampton. He entered the national political arena after serving as Lieutenant Governor and Governor of Massachusetts. “Silent Cal” was 29th U.S. President Warren G. Harding’s running mate and assumed the presidency after Harding’s death of a heart attack.
