In full, "Thank you for your thoughtful letter about throwing out the first baseball of the new season. Your idea of putting the ball into play instead of exchanging it with the catcher is an interesting one, and I'll remember it. Like baseball fans everywhere, I'm sure you share my hope that the current player-owner dispute is quickly resolved so we'll have games to enjoy. Thank you again for writing."

The five-year Basic Agreement between the baseball players and team owners expired on December 31, 1989. A threatened lockout of Spring Training camps by the owners began on February 15, 1990, when collective bargaining talks between them and the players union, the Major League Players Association, failed to reach an agreement regarding revenue-sharing. On March 19, 1990, a new Basic Agreement was reached. The lockout lasted 32 days and as a result, wiped out most of Spring Training. Opening Day was rescheduled and the season had to be extended by three days in order to accommodate the 162-game schedule.

In 1948, Babe Ruth visited Yale University and presented his autobiography to the school library which George H.W. Bush accepted as team captain of Yale's baseball team.
