Description:

Boudinot Elias 1740 - 1821 Elias Boudinot ALS 1806, President of the Continental Congress and Director of the U.S. Mint, requests money for his expenses

Single page ALS, 7" x 7.75", inlaid to a page 7" x 10.75". Lightly toned with ghosting of the portrait image which was on the opposite page. Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Boudinot, 4.5" x 6.75" inlaid to a page 7" x 10.75".

Boudinot was an established statesman and lawyer from New Jersey who served as the President of the Continental Congress. Born in 1740, Boudinot lived a politically active life. After the American Revolution, Boudinot represented New Jersey in the U.S. Congress. Shortly following his service as a congressman, George Washington appointed him as Director of the United States Mint in 1795. Boudinot served as Director from 1795 until 1805. With a slight ironic twist, this US Mint Director's ALS is asking for financial assistance for a note and payment of his expenses, offering repayment upon his return to the city. His letter is shown below:

"Burlington Feby 8, 1806

Dear Sirs

Your very Hble Serv

Elias Boudinot

Jonathan Small esq"

A lovely ALS which would present well framed with this engraved portrait.
