Van Buren, Martin (1782-1862) Martin Van Buren, as President, signs a War appointment document, appointing future Civil War General "John H. King" to "First Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Infantry" in the service of the United States

A partially printed document signed "M VanBuren" as President, 1 page 13.5" x 17.5", on vellum, [Washington], February 20, 1840, countersigned, "JR Poinsett" as Secretary Of War, with the original embossed seal affixed to the upper left margin of the page. Expected soft folds with one tiny spot of paper loss. Slight creasing to upper left of page and the seal. Requisite scripted notes to upper left margin describing the recording of the document.

Martin Van Buren signs a beautifully engraved war document appointing "John H. King" to "First Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Infantry" in the service of the United States as follows:

"Know Ye That resposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities of "John H. King" I have nominated and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate do appoint him "First Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Infantry" in the service of the United States. He is therefore carefully and diligently to discharge the duty of "First Lieutenant" by doing and performing all manner of things thereunto belonging. And I do strictly charge and require from me, or the future President of the United States of America or General or other superior Officers set over him according to the rules and discipline of War."
