Pope John Paul II

Popes John Paul II and Paul VI Signed Vatican Postal Cover

A postal cover signed by Pope Paul VI as "Paulus P.P. VI--" and Pope John Paul II as "Joannes Paulus pp II". Bearing several Vatican postage stamps and several hand-stamps, ca. 1969-1980. Pristine condition. 7.875" x 5.5".

A glossy philatelic cover commemorating Pope Paul VI's visit to Geneva has been applied to the lower right corner of a larger envelope. Pope Paul VI's signature bridges the two documents at lower right, as does Pope John Paul II's signature at upper right. Bearing a 20 lire purple Vatican stamp postmarked from "Citta de Vaticano Poste" on July 10, 1969, and two canceled "Poste Vaticane" stamps hand-stamped June 2, 1980. The whole abounds with gorgeous papal seals featuring the multitiered tiara flanked by Saint Peter's crossed keys.

Pope Paul VI (Italian, born Giovanni Montini, 1897-1978), led the Roman Catholic Church between 1963-1978. During his papacy, Paul VI implemented many internal reforms affecting the clergy and liturgy. He was also known for expanding the cult of Mary, and for his progressive outreach to Protestants and Eastern Orthodox Christians. Paul VI was canonized in 2018.

Pope John Paul II (Polish, born Karol Wojtyla, 1920-2005) served as Bishop of Rome between 1978-2005. Though more conservative than Pope Paul VI, John Paul also welcomed cooperation between disparate religious groups, even those outside of Christianity. John Paul II took controversial positions on political issues, including Communism and apartheid. He was canonized in 2014.
