Robert Browning was a Victorian poet and playwright whose work harvested classical, historical, and literary themes from sources as diverse as Shakespeare and Renaissance Italy. His poetry features both blank verse and various rhyming patterns. He married the well-established British poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) in 1846; their courtship inspired some of the best romantic poetry of each.

After their marriage, Robert and Elizabeth relocated to Italy, where they absorbed the cultural and linguistic riches of a place Browning called "his university". The pair befriended other literary and artistic figures of their day, including William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863), Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892), Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896), George Sand (1804-1876), and John Ruskin (1819-1900). Was this signature clip extracted from a letter Browning wrote to an intellectual notable of his day?
