Description:

Slavery

Single page light blue ledger sheet, scripted on front and verso, 7.5" x 12" representing "a true and correct inventory of all property of Thomas Byrd Dec'd as was shown us by her Exutors[sic]"  and continued in detail to list out Property both "Real + Personal" which were then willed to others. Other than the "House and Lot" inclusive of a few farm animals, the vast majority  of the property represented slaves listed out by name and value. Document circa 1857 based on the date of death of Thomas Byrd, who owned a 1,700 acre plantation. Expected folds with toning, slight thinning to paper not affecting text, else near fine.

An incredible ledger for the legal disbursement of the Thomas Byrd 1700 acre plantation estate in South Carolina, circa 1857 just prior to the Civil War. Approximately 49 slaves are listed as part of the Byrd estate, each listed by name and value (most range between $500 to $1,000 per slave). Some names are noted in groups " Nelly Emma + Alexander", others are noted as a pair of two for a mother and infant "Cindy + Infant Rachel".  Noteworthy is that the slaves were disbursed amongst his various heirs and not kept.

A rather sobering ledger to see that slaves are listed by name alongside "Two Horses", "One yoke of oxen" or "Contents of Kitchen".
