Description:

Planck Signed Friedrich Wilhelm University Course Schedule

A 4pp document in German from Berlin's Friedrich Wilhelm University, signed by German physicist and professor Max Planck (1858-1947) as "Planck" on the last page, and also co-signed by three other faculty members, including German economist Max Sering (1857-1939), in the same section. Issued from Berlin, Imperial Germany on March 7, 1914. The untranslated document is an original academic certificate, confirming the 1913/1914 course schedule of a student named Kurt Lutze from Hasselfelde. Partly printed and partly handwritten in gorgeous non-modern German cursive on legal-sized bifold paper. The first page features a profusely decorated heading, topped by an imperial eagle, and the last page incorporates a royal emblem. Expected paper folds, one with a minor closed tear. Light even toning, and an isolated blue scuff affecting the bottom of the fourth page, mentioned just for accuracy. Else near fine. 8.75" x 13.675."

The first page conveys personal details about the student, and the last page is signed by university officials including Planck and Sering. The second and third inner pages contain a listing of the courses and lectures in which the student was enrolled. These courses were instructed by a coterie of brilliant doctors and professors, including Max Sering (line number 8). Coursework included philosophy "From [Immanuel] Kant to [Georg] Hegel," (line number 6), and pertained to the economic theories of Karl Marx (line number 9.)

Max Planck taught physics at Friedrich Wilhelm University--also called the University of Berlin--between 1889-1928; he became a full professor there in 1892. During his tenure at the institution, Planck discovered energy quanta while studying black-body radiation, revealing groundbreaking facts about the atomic and subatomic world. Planck was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918 for this discovery. As an undergraduate student, Planck had taken an especial interest in theoretical physics and the study of thermodynamics.

Friedrich Wilhelm University was established in 1810 by Emperor Friedrich Wilhelm III. One of the leading European universities of its day, it offered its matriculants courses in law, medicine, science, theology, history, and philosophy. The university was renamed Humboldt University of Berlin in 1949.
