Col. Charles A. Lindbergh signed this photograph on June 3, 1927, his last day in Paris. On the morning of June 4, 1927, Lindbergh flew aboard a French army biplane from Le Bourget to Cherbourg, the French port in Normandy where the USS Memphiswas docked. His plane, Spirit of St. Louis, was already on the American cruiser, packed in two long wooden crates weighing three tons. At 4:30 that afternoon, the USS Memphissteamed out of Cherbourg Harbor headed for Washington, D.C. Shortly before 9 P.M., June 10, 1927, the Memphisentered the Potomac River and dropped anchor off Piney Point, Maryland, continuing on to Washington at 4 A.M. where he was hailed as a hero.
