Description:

Philippe Halsman
n.p., ca. 1949
Philippe Halsman, "Paulette Goddard (Illuminated Motion Study)" With Copyright Stamp
Photograph

A photograph of Hollywood actress Paulette Goddard (1910-1990) taken by Latvian portrait photographer Philippe Halsman (1906-1979). Ca. 1949. N.p. The photograph shows two dissimilar full-length back views of Goddard in the same field of vision, interconnected by white streaks of light. It is cataloged in some museum collections under the title "Paulette Goddard (Illuminated Motion Study)." The black and white glossy photograph is hand-stamped at center verso as: "© Copyright / by / Philippe Halsman." Additionally pencil-inscribed verso as "Paulette Goddard / 49." Expected wear including isolated wrinkles and negligible corner bumping. Mounting traces and isolated surface abrasion along the top edge verso. Else near fine. 10.875" x 14".

Philippe Halsman had developed a reputation in mid-20th C. photographic circles for taking thought-provoking portraits of his subjects. The photos were sometimes disconcerting or shocking, and always arresting. Halsman used color, distortion, props, and action to help his sitters feel more uninhibited, and to highlight their psychological state. The illuminated motion study photograph of Goddard evokes Halsman's photograph of Dali, where the artist is juxtaposed with a cascade of water and cats, seemingly frozen in the air. Halsman's photographic series of jumping celebrities became his famous 1959 "Jump Book." In addition to Paulette Goddard, other Halsman subjects included John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, Alfred Hitchcock, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, among many others.
