Philip K. Dick Very Rare TLS to a Fan Re: "Blade Runner," With PSA LOA
TLS

Philip K. Dick (1928-1982). Typed Letter Signed, "Phil," 1p, 8.5" x 11", Santa Ana, California, October 2, 1981. With PSA sticker affixed at lower right matching accompanying Certificate of Authenticity. Waviness and shallow folds, with one horizontal mailing fold through signature. In near fine condition.

Dick writes to "Mark," an admirer who has requested his autograph. In full: "Thank you for your request for the enclosed autographs and also for the gracious letter. Yes, BLADE RUNNER is going to be great; the excellent screenplay assures it. They started out with such a poor screenplay that I thought the project doomed, but their shooting script is simply superb; it moved me to tears.

Yes, I am approved of by the French intellectuals, but so, too, is Jerry Lewis; in any case I had a wonderful time when I was there. One thing I wanted to ask you; you say Fritz Leiber turned you down on your request for autographs. Did he simply fail to answer, or did he go to the trouble of writing you to say he wouldn't sign his name three times? Fritz may have been over-worked; he is well on in years, you know. Fritz has been through some very hard times, Mark; I know him and I know that he lost a wonderful wife, and that will do it to you (God knows it's happened to me often enough!). Anyhow, I hope my response will somewhat restore your faith in mankind.

I'm including an addendum to my recent novel VALIS; it explains itself, sort of. I'm not sure how seriously you should take the enclosed Xeroxed pages, or for that matter how seriously I should take them. Anyhow here they are, and I hope they do not offend you; I have gotten some rather abusive mail in response, so I am a little nervous about it all. I guess if one thinks one has had a vision of the new savior one is going to get a mixed bag of responses upon discussing it. Thank you for your letter, and hope all goes well with you."

A very rare content letter regarding the film "Blade Runner." It is the only one known where Dick comments on the iconic science fiction movie, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harrison Ford, as he passed away before the film was released in 1982.
