All writing on front is in Spector's hand, signed on the payee line as "Phil Spector" and endorsed on verso as "D. Hopper". "The Last Movie" is a 1971 metafictional drama film directed by Dennis Hopper, who also stars as a horse wrangler named after the state of Kansas. In July 1966, the New York Times reported that record producer Phil Spector would help make the movie with Hopper. Filming occurred during much of 1970, and saw rising tensions between Hopper and the movie's screenwriter, Stewart Stern. Despite high expectations from its production studio, the film proved to be both a critical and financial flop at the time of release, but has since become a cult classic.
