An elegant early land grant for property in present day Hoboken, New Jersey, penned in Dutch and signed by Peter Stuyvesant. Represents an excellent example of the early Dutch land transactions of this period, reflecting the burgeoning colonization on the west side of the Hudson River, facing New Amsterdam. "Peter Stuyvesant, on behalf of their Excellencies the Lords & Directors of the chartered West Indies Company...of the Governor General of the New Netherlands, Curacao, Bonaire, Aruba and appendages..." The grant comprises "a piece of land along the Continental coast at Haassemus, on the west side of the valley leading to the North River [Hudson]...excepting a wagon route between the valley and the woodland." The precise boundaries are described in rods and include "a property...where Jacob Stoffels lives," and "another piece for garden and orchard..." With a transcript and a full translation as shown below:

"Peter Stuyvesant, on behalf of their Excellencies the Lords (of the) General States (Assembly) of the United Netherlands, and the Honourable Lords (the) Directors of the chartered West Indies Company of the Amsterdam Office (of the) Governor General of the New Netherlands, Curacao, Bonaire, Aruba and appendages, together (called) the Honourable Lords, (do) announce and declare that we today, on the date noted below, have given and granted to Claes Jansen van Purmerent (i.e. originally from Purmerend, north of Amsterdam) a piece of land along the continental coasts at Haassemus, on the west side of the valley leading to (i.e. the valley of) the North [= Hudson] River, excepting[?] a wagon route between the valley and the woodland, stretching seventy-five rods from the path straight west, seventy-five rods south, one hunderd rods east to the river, comprising ten morgens, [and] three-hundred sixty- two (square) rods; a piece of (the) valley situated between Haassemus and Hoboken abutting on the east-northeast side the Hoboken Channel, on the south side a 'kriekje' [like the modern American 'creek'?], on the west-southwest side the fence that prevents the livestock from entering the high wood[,] thirty rods across, one hundred eighty rods long, making 9 morgens. Further a property on the northeast side of Uff where Jacob Stoffels lives, on the southwest side of Yde Cornelis van Vorst, southeast and northwest sides 8 8/10 rods, southwest side 20 rods, northeast side 21 rods. Another piece for garden and orchard on the northeast side of the wagon path (running) along the wagon path 12 3/16 rods, southeast side 19 rods, southwest side 18 3/10 rods, northwest 17 3/10 rods. With the express conditions and (conditions) that he, Claes Janssen or whosoever should later receive his authorization will be recognized by their Excellencies... as proper resident...

NB: 1 (Amsterdam) rod = 3.68 m; 1 (Amsterdam) morgen = 8129 m square, so 1 morgan = 24.5 x 24.5 rods = 600 square rods. Etc etc."

Examples of very early land deeds, especially with Peter Stuyvesant's signature, are quite scarce.
