Description:

Newell Peter 1862 - 1924
Peter Newell published pen and ink illustration art, precursor to "Far Side" humor, "Alice In Wonderland" illustrator

Illustration original art. Pen and Ink on bristol board, 15" x 12.5". Soft soiling/handling marks, with several small faded stains. Faint pencil marks. Verso with publisher's identification of "SA Nich Min B5258 / The Monkey Cage." Signed by Peter Newell lower right "P. Newell / 92 / N.Y."

A spectacular inked final published satirical cartoon, perhaps a precursor concept to the "Far Side" cartoons, this spectacular scene first shows the classic Zoo setting of a boy looking at a sadly caged, supposedly dumb zoo monkey. Embellished with a sign saying "Do Not Annoy The Animals", only to then find in the second image, shown this time from inside the cage and from the monkey's perspective while the monkey is now in turn staring at the dumb boy, another sign saying "Do Not Annoy the People". Obviously now demonstrating that monkeys can not only read, but can also placate the human's need to depict them as 'dumb' animals. (This concept becomes the main premise for all the "Far Side" cartoons later created by Gary Larson.)

Peter Newell, American artist and writer was a brilliant satirical artist in addition to illustrating children's books. His work appeared in numerous magazines including Harper's Weekly, Harper's Bazaar, Scribner's Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, Judge and others. Newell was also known for the Harper & Brothers, New York, 1901 edition of Alice in Wonderland.

Signed by Newell lower right, this large spectacular piece is in great condition and would display beautifully framed. It will be accompanied by a photocopy of the image as it appeared in the magazine.
