Jefferson Thomas

Peter Jefferson, Tom's Dad, Early Virginia DS Regarding 42,472 Lbs. of Tobacco Debt - Scarce Signature!

A document signed by Peter Jefferson (1708-1757), the father of Declaration Signer and 3rd U.S. President Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), as "Pet Jefferson" at bottom right. Handsomely displayed in a floating mount to the left of a color print entitled "Harper's Ferry, Virginia, from Jefferson Rock". Matted and framed behind UV ray filtering Plexiglas. Not examined out of frame. The overall framed size is 27.75" x 22" x 1.25".

Peter Jefferson was one of five signees of this document drafted in the "County of Goochland", northwest of Richmond, Virginia, on December 17, 1739. Three blind embossed paper seals remain intact alongside the signatures of Arthur Hopkins, Peter Jefferson, and Henry Wood at bottom right. With expected paper folds, including some well-creased. Scattered stains, chipped edges, and minor holes consistent with age. Else very good to near fine. 7.125" x 11.75". A second document dated July 17, 1739 is stored in a transparent pouch on the back of the frame. This document relates to another legal matter and is inscribed with 35+ words in Peter Jefferson's hand, and signed by him as "Pet Jefferson" at bottom. The frame shows expected surface wear, including isolated loss at lower right, else near fine.

The document displayed within the frame reads in part, with untouched spelling and punctuation:

"Know all men by these Presents that Wee Arthur Hopkins, Henry Wood, + Peter Jefferson ---- are holden and firmly bound unto John Fleming Gent on behalf of the whole court for the County of Goochland in the Sum of forty two thousand four hundred seventy two - Pounds of Tobacco to the payment whereof well and truly to be made unto the said John Fleming - his Executors Administrators and Assignes Wee bind us and each of us our and each of our heirs Executors +c. Joyntly and Severally firmly by these presents Sealed with Our Seals + Dated the 17th ---- day of December one Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Nine…"

Peter Jefferson was an early Virginian tobacco planter, slaveowner, surveyor, and mapmaker. Two months before Peter signed this document, in early October 1739, he married Jane Randolph (1720-1776); document co-signee Arthur Hopkins provided security and co-signee Henry Wood served as witness to their marriage bond. Thomas Jefferson, born in 1743, was the couple's third child and first son. Peter's property was estimated to be 7,200 acres upon his death.

Jefferson Rock is a shale rock formation overlooking the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. The geological landmark was named after Thomas Jefferson, who visited the site in October 1783 and described it in his 1785 Notes on the State of Virginia.
