Loyson Hyacinthe

Pere Hyacinthe archive dating from before & after his 1869 excommunication from the Roman Catholic Church

Small archive comprised of 3 ALSs, one AQS, and one ANS inscribed overall in French and signed by French theologian Pere Hyacinthe as "Fr. Hyacinthe", "Fr. Hyacinthe Loyson" (2); and "Hyacinthe Loyson" (2). Items are inscribed on cream bifold stationery in near fine condition, with expected paper folds. One letter is hinged along left edge to cardstock support. Another letter with isolated edge wear and minor surface grime. Average letter size 5.25" x 8". From the Collection of Norman Boas of Seaport Autographs and recently purchased at Christie's December 5, 2017 sale.

In a letter dated April 21, 1869, Pere Hyacinthe wrote an unidentified correspondent: "I hasten to tell you that my discourse for the earthquake victims is going to be published in the Correspondant the 25th, and the next day in brochure form at Mr. Albanels." Signed "Fr. Hyacinthe" at bottom right of first page.

Pere Hyacinthe cancelled an appointment with an unidentified professor in New York on October 27, 1869: "An unforeseen engagement removes my liberty today at 1:30. I don't dare ask you to come this evening at 7:30, because I fear that would inconvenience you … ". Signed "Fr. Hyacinthe Loyson" at bottom right of first page.

On October 29, 1869, Pere Hyacinthe wrote an unidentified woman: "I will gladly await your return from Boston. I don't send you wishes for a happy voyage today, because I hope to see you again before your departure, and I don't forget that I must attend the sermon of Rev. Doctor Thompson with you and Mr. Darling this Sunday." Signed "Fr. Hyacinthe Loyson" at bottom right of first page. The minister here mentioned was likely Joseph Parrish Thompson (1819-1879), the minister of Broadway Tabernacle Church in New York City between 1845-1871.

Pere Hyacinthe enclosed a biblical quote to 18-year-old Olaf Halvorsen on "27, Boulevard d'Inkermann, Parc de Neuilly, pres Paris" letterhead on December 23, 1890. He quoted I John 2:14, "Be strong, young man, and that the word of God abide in you, and that you vanquish evil." Signed "Hyacinthe Loyson" at bottom right of first page.

An undated note, probably an address label, lists a Montreux, Switzerland address for "Hyacinthe Loyson" and his wife Emilie Jane Butterfield Meriman.

Charles Jean Marie Loyson (1827-1912), also known as Pere Hyacinthe, was a Roman Catholic priest famous throughout France for his rousing sermons. He was known especially for his eloquent sermons at Notre Dame de Paris and sought to reconcile Catholicism with modern ideas. His espousal of controversial ideas, like the fallibility of the Pope, led to his excommunication from the Roman Catholic Church in 1869. Three of these letters date from just before and after his excommunication and subsequent trip to New York City. Loyson established the Gallican Church in 1878 as an alternative to Roman Catholicism.
