In 1780, during the Revolutionary War, Pennsylvania issued horse bonds to compensate citizens for horses taken, both willingly and unwilling, for use by the Continental Army. These bonds, also known as appraisal certificates, served as receipts and indicated the state's debt to the horse owners. They were crucial for the army's mobility and logistics.

The here offered receipt is headed, "Lancaster County. Pensylvania. No. 35," and reads: "I do hereby certify that Alexander McClure of the Township of Paxton has furnished this State, for the Use of the United States, with one Small Horse twelve years old Branded F which has been Appraised by two Freeholders, on Oath at the Sum of Thirty Eight pounds in specie or the Exchange at Sixty for one in Continental Currency and for which the State is now justly indebted to him in that Sum, with Interest. Given under my Hand, this 25 August A. D. 1780. James Bayly W.M.G.L.C. / £38 25th August 1780."

On June 19, 1781, Jacob Morgan paid off the balance plus interest for this bond. At top margin: "Philad. June 19: 1781 of Jacob Morgan Jr. thirty Nine Pounds Seventeen Shillings in full of Principal and Interest for this Certificate - £39..17..0 [Signed] Wm. Hay."
