John Paul "Jack" Howatt (died 1987) first enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1935, graduating from the Naval Academy in 1940. He would go on to serve with distinction during World War II, supervising the salvage of the U.S.S. Arizona at Pearl Harbor and later took part in the invasion of southern France. Howatt's name is among the 320 men honored as survivors of the December 7th attack on the Arizona, etched within the ship's memorial at Pearl Harbor.

During the attack, Arizona was hit by several air-dropped armor-piercing bombs. One detonated an explosive-filled magazine, sinking the battleship and killing 1,177 of its 1,512 officers and crewmen. Unlike many of the other ships attacked that day, Arizona was so irreparably damaged that it was not repaired for service in World War II. The shipwreck still lies at the bottom of Pearl Harbor, beneath the USS Arizona Memorial.
