Not many relics survive today from the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, let alone a postal cover sent the day of the attack. It is ephemera like this that makes war come to life. One can imagine how innocent life was for the servicemen who sent the letter in this envelope just moments before the world would change forever.

The USS New Orleans (CA-32), a heavy cruiser of the New Orleans-class, played a pivotal role during World War II and narrowly escaped destruction during the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941. At the time of the Japanese surprise attack, the New Orleans was docked at Pearl Harbor for maintenance, and some of her machinery had been dismantled for repairs. Despite this vulnerable state, she managed to avoid the brunt of the assault that devastated much of the Pacific Fleet.

As the Japanese planes bombed and torpedoed nearby ships, including the USS Arizona and USS Oklahoma, the crew of the New Orleans quickly sprang into action. Although they had limited operational systems, her anti-aircraft gunners contributed to the defense, helping to bring down some of the attacking aircraft. Her position at the repair docks likely saved her from more severe damage, as the Japanese primarily focused on the battleships anchored along Battleship Row.
