Description:

Buck Pearl 1892 - 1973 Pearl Buck signed manuscript read upon receiving Novel Prize!

Typed Manuscript Signed twice, 33 pages, large 4to, (1938). A Manuscript entitled The Chinese Novel, with a note at the top of page 1 in her hand "This copy was the one I readbefore the Swedish Academy upon the occasion of receiving the Nobel Prize, P.S.B." The Manuscript concerns the separation of art from literature in China, and how scholars used to be held in contempt by many people. She uses an old Chinese joke to illustrate this. She speaks of Chinese history and literature, and compares several Chinese stories to each other and to Western literature, mentioning Emily Dickinson, and saying there has been no Chinese Dickens or Flaubert, or any others like them. Each page has some manuscript corrections in her hand mostly in ink, numbering over 200 words in her hand. She also signed in full at the upper right of page one. The manuscript is in very good condition with a few printer's markings indicating that it was published. The actual Original Manuscript used when a Noble Laureate is making an acceptance speech is extremely rare and important.
