Schulz, Charles (1922-2000) Schulz handwrites his favorite books as a teenager including "All of Sherlock Holmes novels & stories", Snoopy dressed as Sherlock Holmes in an animated TV special, "It's a Mystery, Charlie Brown" in 1974

Typed Letter Signed "Charles M. Schulz," 1 page, 6.25" x 7". On his personal stationery depicting Charlie Brown, Snoopy lying on his doghouse, and a fallen kite. Sebastopol, California, January 30, 1968. To Miss E.B. Byrne, New York. With original postmarked envelope, addressed by Byrne, enclosed with Byrne's letter to him. Also: a mimeographed 8.5" x 11" sheet with 25 words in Schulz's hand and the original postmarked Snoopy envelope. Fine condition.

(1) Typed Letter Signed in full, "You certainly may have my permission to reprint the letter I write to you about the books I enjoyed as a teenager. I am so flattered that you should wish to do so. Kindest regards"

(2) Accompanied by Schulz's original April 19, 1967, postmarked envelope picturing Snoopy lying on his doghouse, and a one page mimeographed list sent to him by Byrne beginning: "The following list evolved from a lengthy discussion in the joint meeting of the journalism club and the library squad. We decided that the following favorite authors would most influence he students' reading choices." Listed alphabetically are 22 authors alive at the time. Next to his name, which the he has underlined, Schulz has penned in green felt-tip pen: "Treasure Island, Beau Geste, All of Sherlock Holmes novels & stories & a book about newspaper people called My Last Million Readers by Gauvereau [sic, Gauvreau]" In Schulz's 1974 televised animated special "It's a Mystery, Charlie Brown," adopting the guise of Sherlock Holmes with cloak, deerstalker cap, and bubble pipe, Snoopy hunts for Woodstock's missing nest.

From 1966 to 1970, Evelyn Byrne ran a program at New York City's Elizabeth Barrett Browning Junior High School where she asked major literary and artistic figures of the time to write back with their recollections of what books inspired them while they were teenagers. An assortment of their responses were published in the book Attacks of Taste, printed in 1971 by Gotham Book Mart.
