Description:

Paul von Hindenburg Sig W/ "Hindenburg" Fabric Swatch

An interesting lot connecting Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934), President of Germany from 1925-1934, and the ill-fated dirigible named after him, "LZ 129 Hindenburg." All but one of the items of the lot are mounted in a handsome shrink-wrapped matted display measuring 20" x 16" x .25." Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from Strike Zone, Inc. (Alachua, Florida) and a Certificate of Authenticity from R&R Enterprises Autograph Auctions (Amherst, New Hampshire.)

The lot is comprised of:

1. A vintage art print card showing a detail of Paul von Hindenburg, after the original oil on canvas portrait by Franz Triebsch, ca. 1926. Von Hindenburg has boldly signed the bottom of the card as "von Hindenburg." His signature is embellished with many decorative flourishes. Lightly toned, with isolated foxing, else near fine. 4.625" x 6.5."

Paul von Hindenburg led the Imperial German Army during World War I and later oversaw the Weimar Republic from 1925-1934.

In the display:

2. An authentic fabric swatch of the outer skin of the "LZ 129 Hindenburg," displayed in a shallow cavity located in the upper right corner of the mat. The swatch is silvery in appearance and measures .25" x 25." The outer fabric shell of the "Hindenburg" was made of cotton covered with plasticized lacquer known as "dope" which gave it rigidity.

3. Matted to the left of the fabric swatch is a high-quality photo reproduction depicting the "Hindenburg" disaster. A "Strike Zone" tamper-proof hologram is discretely positioned in the corner and matches one on the COA. The sight size of the photo reproduction measures 9.75" x 6.875."

4. A color reproduction of the "Hindenburg" wine list positioned under the fabric swatch adds a glamorous touch to the display, and testifies to the airship industry's fervent hope that dirigibles were the transportation method of the future.

5. An engraved plaque below the "Hindenburg" crash photo reproduction provides pertinent information about the disaster and the fabric swatch.

The "LZ 129 Hindenburg" was a hydrogen-filled, gas-powered rigid airship manufactured by the Zeppelin Company from 1931 to 1936. During its 14 months of commercial passenger service, "Hindenburg" successfully completed 63 flights to and from Europe and North and South America. The "Hindenburg" was the largest commercial airship ever constructed. It provided luxurious accommodations aboard the airship, including a smoking room, lounge, and sleeping cabins, as well as window-lit passenger promenades.

The "Hindenburg" erupted into flame on May 6, 1937 as it was attempting to moor in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The exact cause of the fire is still unknown, but scientists speculate that a hydrogen leak was caused by an environmental electrostatic charge. Once ignited, the fabric skin of the "Hindenburg" was consumed in approximately 34 seconds. 62 passengers and crew survived from the original roster of 97; 35 people died aboard the ship, and one additional linesman was killed on the ground.
