Description:

Paul Signac 2x Signed ALS Referring to the State of the Société des Artistes Indépendantes After WWI

A 2pp autograph letter in French inscribed overall and twice signed by French artist Paul Signac (1863-1935), the first time as "Paul Signac" on the first page, and the second time with his initials as "P.S." on the second page. Written at Saint-Tropez, France on March 14, 1919 on both sides of a single leaf of paper. Expected wear including toning, paper folds, and a few extra wrinkles, else near fine. 8.25" x 10.5." Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

French artist Paul Signac co-founded the Société des Artistes Indépendantes [trans: "Society of Independent Artists"] in Paris in July 1884. The group was dedicated to creating an all-inclusive and fostering work environment, a dedicated exhibition space for displaying their work and the work of their colleagues without the process of jury admission. Liberated from this restriction, everyone could exhibit their work, no matter how unconventional or revolutionary it was. The Société des Artistes Indépendantes would flourish for 30 years, suspending its expositions only during World War I. In this letter written to an unknown correspondent, probably a journalist or art critic, Signac discusses how the group will resume its exposition schedule now that World War I had ended.

Translated in part:

"Dear Sir,

I have here no photo, - Druet had photographed me many times either in my studio, or either at the Independents [venue where the group met]. - Maybe you will find it at his place. (Galerie Druet 14 rue Royale) a picture to reproduce. This very week Excelsior reproduced my head, next to those of the three presidents of the other salons and I think that at Druet's he will be able to procure this image.

Please accept my thanks for the interest that you take in our society. [Be assured of] the expression of our most sympathetically devoted sentiments.

Paul Signac

In your article about the Independents, you will be very kind in insisting on this point: Being an exposition of young people, we could not organize an exposition before our youngest colleagues are demobilized. We must only wait for next spring when they think to bring us their works - The principal worry of the Committee during the long months of this atrocious war was to reserve all the rights of the combatants.

P.S."

Along with Signac, founding members of the Société des Artistes Indépendantes included Signac's Pointillist mentor Georges Seurat and fellow Symbolist artist Odilon Redon.
